The Heinous Crimes Sealed by a Presidential Pardon

President Donald Trump is known for taking decisions without gauging the pulse of people and the mood of the civil society.

This was exactly true when he made sure that the convicted sheriff Joe Arpaio saved by Presidential order. But, the issue has made wide anger from people, and they formed associations and protested against it.

A large number of people from the Maricopa County, the county of the former sheriff, came out and spoke about the bad experiences and tortures they received from Arpaio. Two prominent journalists from Arizona, Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey also joined the group to protest the decision of the President.

Interestingly, Lacey and Larkin also experienced the tortures of the sheriff as they got arrested in 2007 by the officers of Arpaio. They were taken into custody for writing against Arpaio, especially targeting his corruption and tortures. When heard about the Presidential pardon, Michael Lacey said that President Trump proved that he is a moron multiple times in the past, and the latest incident reconfirms it.

He described the Presidential pardon as a marriage agreement between two corrupted and divisive individuals. While talking about Arpaio, Lacey confirmed that he was propagating torture and racism in the society during his years of the administration.

Lacey confirms that brutal jail conditions, inmates’ suicides, sex-crimes even targeting children, beating to deaths, and more were very common during his years of rein. To make the torture to an extreme extent, Arpaio constructed a special tent city prison in the deserts of Arizona. The inmates or detainees who were locked there should also be had to bear the hot summers.

The mindset of Arpaio came out when he addressed the detention center as the concentration camp owned by him, in a TV interview. Though he escaped from the law on every irregularities and torture, the racial profiling especially targeting Latinos became costly for him as it ended with a criminal conviction against him. Like many other people, Lacey too thinks that even if Trump did not come rescue him, Arpaio would have utilized the age factor to escape from the further proceedings of law. But, Lacey feels that it could have been a big failure to the justice system of the country.

He added that the former Drug Enforcement Administration official, Arpaio was claiming himself as the toughest sheriff of the country since he was elected to the office in 1992 for the first time. The sheriff was known for several torture campaigns including female chain gangs, feeding inmates rotten fruit and green bologna, and more.

While coming to the detention of Lacey and Larkin in 2007, Arpaio could not control the public protest and released the reporters immediately after the arrest. It was widely regarded as an attempt to curtail the fundamental rights of the journalists.

With the support of the civil society, they sued the sheriff and county for the arrest. In 2013, the court severely criticized the sheriff and the county for the arrests. The court also asked the county to pay a settlement of approximately $3.75 million to both Larkin and Lacey.
