The AIA, which stands for the American Institute of Architects is an organization that is for architects all over the world made to support their profession. The historical professional organization can be found in Washington, D.C. and offers education, government business and community structure. They also work with the public to reach out and support the architectural profession in hopes to improve its image in the public.
The AIA is known for working with members of the organization to help continue to instruct the industry of building. Currently, Robert Ivy works as the Chief Executive Officer and Thomas Vonier is the President of AIA.
The AIA was founded in New York City by thirteen architects that gathered to promote the overall structure and meaning behind the organization. The AIA has been conducting business and supporting architects for many years. The group met back in 1857 to discuss the matters and decided to invite 16 more architects into the picture in February of 1857. Before the American Institute of Architects was officially established, anyone would be able to claim they were an architecture and perform business. The laws in the United States did not require you to be licensed at the time, however, the AIA and their members worked to change that. They soon became a credible and reliable organization with many members. The group worked together to draft a variety of valuable bylaws in March of 1857. The constitution of laws was signed in April of 1857 and architects began to abide by them. After one year, they decided to amend the constitution to cater even more towards the architects and tweak each bylaw to better conform to their standards. The AIA began to grow rapidly and many were asking to join by the 1860’s. Twenty years later, many chapters had been formed in cities such as Cincinnati, Rhode Island and San Francisco.
The organization currently holds over 90,000 licensed architects that are deliberately associated with each aspect at AIA. Every single member must follow a certain code of ethics that are in line with a vast amount of professionalism. Their current status allows architects within the organization to have the ability to let clients know that they are dedicated to practicing at the highest standards and will continue to do so in the future. They want to make sure that the public, as well as their colleagues, understand that their professional message is something they always adhere to.
